Scan of the Eastcliffe Hall

Testing out the Side-Scan at Morrisburg

Well I picked up a new depth sounder that has some side-scanning capabilities and thought I'd try it out. The scans are of some of the sites in Morrisburg.

We headed up to Morrisburg and Christine and I launched the boat to try this thing out. We were not sure how it would work out, but we actually got some decent images considering it was the first time using this device.

To get a decent image you pretty much have to drive the boat in a straight line so that it scans a straight swath of the bottom with little or no distortion. That was easier said than done since I kept looking at the screen to see how it was progressing.

The images are created by a sonar signal being sent from the transducer under the boat out to the object and then picking up the returning echo. As the boat moves the process repeats until eventually an image is formed on the screen. The image has shadows almost as if someone was shining a flashlight from the boat to cast a shadow on the bottom. The shadow is formed where an object blocks the sonar signal from hitting anything behind that object.

Anyway here is a link to the rest of the images
